Guidelines refer to activities in <\/b><b>terms of who can participate, and what they <\/b><b><i>Can Do <\/i><\/b><b>rather than in terms of those who are ineligible and what they can\u2019t do. <\/b><b>This counteracts the tendency to stereotype persons with disabilities.<\/b><\/p>\n<div class=\"wpforms-field-content-display-frontend-clear\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"wpforms-151-field_51-container\" class=\"wpforms-field wpforms-field-content\" data-field-id=\"51\"><div id=\"wpforms-151-field_51\" class=\"wpforms-field-large wpforms-field-row\" aria-errormessage=\"wpforms-151-field_51-error\"><p class=\"p1\"><strong>DEFINITIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>Functional Independence (FI) &#8211; <\/b>A person\u2019s ability to physically complete a task and\/or to orally instruct others to the extent that one may require assistance based on their level of disability. This includes: mobility \u2014 wheelchair mobility skills\/transfers, ambulation, environmental considerations, and specific adaptive sports skill progressions, and adaptive equipment needs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>Thresholds for Safe Participation (TSP) &#8211; <\/b>A person\u2019s ability to take responsibility for personal decisions and the associated actions knowing that there are consequences, and lasting outcomes for what they do or don\u2019t do. It is imperative to know your limitations and to understand that environmental conditions constantly change. Participation should always be within the scope judgement, ability and training.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>Companion &#8211; <\/b>a person or animal with whom one spends a lot of time or with whom one travels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>Personal Care Assistant (PCA) &#8211; <\/b>A person trained to provide aid and assistance to persons under medical care. They may help with <i>Activities of Daily Living (ADL)<\/i> \u2014 dressing, bathing, eating, and personal care needs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>Adaptive Guides\/Adaptive Sports Instructor- <\/b>A person trained to provide adaptive (sports, recreation or therapeutic adventures) instruction and\/or guide services. Assessment of the adaptive athlete will determine: (a) functional abilities, (b) goals, (c) methods of instruction, (d) adaptive equipment, (e) discretionary support\/assistance to aid persons with disabilities and\/or complex medical needs, and (f) safety considerations. The purposeful outcome of adaptive instruction is to maximize the functional independence of each adaptive athlete.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wpforms-field-content-display-frontend-clear\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"wpforms-151-field_52-container\" class=\"wpforms-field wpforms-field-content\" data-field-id=\"52\"><div id=\"wpforms-151-field_52\" class=\"wpforms-field-large wpforms-field-row\" aria-errormessage=\"wpforms-151-field_52-error\"><p class=\"p1\">TA \/ I~AS Adaptive Snow Sports programs and events are open to all individuals who satisfy the following \u2014 (a) Essential Eligibility Criteria (EEC) as well as (b) Functional Independence (FI) and (c) Thresholds for Safe Participation (TSP) necessary for controlled safe adaptive skiing or snowboarding. Snow Sports participation is broken down in two general categories \u2014 (1) persons who are ambulatory (may have prosthetic or orthotic devices and\/or may use cane(s), crutches, walker, or service dog, (2) persons who use a wheelchair for mobility (manual or electric).<\/p>\n<div class=\"wpforms-field-content-display-frontend-clear\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"wpforms-151-field_56-container\" class=\"wpforms-field wpforms-field-pagebreak\" data-field-id=\"56\"><div class=\"wpforms-clear wpforms-pagebreak-left\"><button class=\"wpforms-page-button wpforms-page-next wpforms-disabled\"\n\t\t\t\t\tdata-action=\"next\" data-page=\"1\" data-formid=\"151\" aria-disabled=\"true\" aria-describedby=\"wpforms-error-noscript\">Next<\/button><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"wpforms-page wpforms-page-2 last \" data-page=\"2\" style=\"display:none;\"><div id=\"wpforms-151-field_54-container\" class=\"wpforms-field wpforms-field-content\" data-field-id=\"54\"><div id=\"wpforms-151-field_54\" class=\"wpforms-field-large wpforms-field-row\" aria-errormessage=\"wpforms-151-field_54-error\"><p class=\"p1\"><strong>ACCEPTANCE OF RISK AND RESPONSIBILITY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Being aware that this activity entails risks or injury to myself and a risk or injury to other third parties as a result of my actions, I knowingly, freely and expressly agree, covenant and promise to accept and assume all responsibility and risk for injury, death, illness or disease, physical or mental, or damage to myself or to my property arising from my participation in this activity. (1) My participation in this activity is purely voluntary, no one is forcing me to participate, and I elect to participate in spite of the risks and assume all responsibility for my participation. (2) I have received adequate information and satisfactory explanation of any unfamiliar terms regarding the rules, regulations, policies and instructional safety procedures governing the operation of programs or services which are a function of Therapeutic Adventures and any other organizations and\/or sponsoring agencies furnishing services and\/or equipment. I have been provided with the opportunity to ask questions to clarify any information which may be unfamiliar to me. (3) I certify that I am physically fit to participate in scheduled Adaptive Snow Sports activities and I have not been advised otherwise by a qualified medical person. I will notify administrative staff, adaptive guides, and volunteer instructors of any allergies, medical conditions or physical disabilities which may affect my ability to participate in scheduled activities. Moreover, I agree to act in a reasonable and safe manner so as to not endanger myself or the lives of other persons or their propertyas to not endanger myself or the lives of other persons or their property.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wpforms-field-content-display-frontend-clear\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"wpforms-151-field_55-container\" class=\"wpforms-field wpforms-field-content\" data-field-id=\"55\"><div id=\"wpforms-151-field_55\" class=\"wpforms-field-large wpforms-field-row\" aria-errormessage=\"wpforms-151-field_55-error\"><p class=\"p1\">In addition to acknowledging general fitness to participate in the adaptive snow sports program, all participants must acknowledge the ability to perform the following minimal functional thresholds for safe participation:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u2756 Participants must be able to comply with CDC, OSHA, GERM, and VA Dept of Health safety and hygiene recommendations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u2756 Participants must be able to follow instructions and effectively communicate independently or with assistance of a companion or PCA.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u2756 Participants must be COVID-19 symptom-free for 2 weeks prior to the scheduled activity date.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u2756 Participants (adaptive athletes, siblings, parents, and staff volunteers) must be able to wear properly fitting Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) \u2014 masks\/face-covering and other equipment deemed appropriate during scheduled programming and logistics activities whenever in the company of others.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u2756 Participants must be able to follow safety rules and protocols \u2014 scheduled temperature checks, washing hands, social distancing and other identified personal protection procedures deemed appropriate \u2014 independently or with the assistance of a companion or PCA.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">All snow-based program participants (including all alpine, snowboard, nordic and snowshoeing) must additionally acknowledge the following:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u2756 Participants who have temporary or permanent disabilities may require one or more types of adaptive equipment in order to ski or ride. The allowance of adaptive snow sports equipment that is designed and manufactured solely intended for use by individuals who have disabilities is in accordance with ADA section 36.302(b)(2)(A)(ii)*.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u2756 Participants must always wear properly fitting snow sports gear, safety equipment including but not limited to a helmet, seasonal clothing layers with: UV protection; temperature\/thermoregulation capabilities (hot\/cold); wind, moisture, rain protection; reflective properties, boots as well as other adaptive equipment wherever and whenever required by snow sports industry standards.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u2756 Participants must be able to comply with basic directions, and rules independently or with the assistance of an adaptive guide\/instructor or companion: i.e. following directions, taking turns, waiting for the instructor or rest of the group.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u2756 Participants must always use adaptive equipment restraint devices deemed necessary wherever and whenever required by snow sports industry standards.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u2756 Participants who use sit-ski equipment (Mono-ski or Bi-ski) may not weigh more than 220 lbs. due to the specified equipment limits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u2756 Participants who use sit-ski equipment (Bi-ski) must be able to independently hold their head upright without neck\/ head support.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u2756 Participants must be able to breathe independently without medical devices to sustain breathing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u2756 Participants must be able to manage personal care independently or with assistance of a companion or PCA.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u2756 Participants must be able to manage personal mobility (ambulation or wheelchair) independently or with a reasonable amount of assistance <i>(adaptations implemented which do not fundamentally alter the nature of the program).<\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><i>NOTE: Safety of ALL (participants, companions\/PCA, staff instructors, and volunteers is of paramount importance. Adaptive <\/i><i>Guides\/Instructors may need to include additional safety-based EEC to address environmental factors such as extreme temperatures, <\/i><i>deep snow, ice, inclines\/declines, and other environmental conditions).<\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Refer to adaptive disciplines for descriptions: <i>(2-Track, 3-Track, 4-Track, Mono-Ski, Bi-Ski, Guiding for Blind\/Visually Impaired or <\/i><i>Deaf\/Hearing Impaired, Snowboard, Nordic Skiing, Snowshoeing). Adaptive equipment is to be used for operational purposes only: <\/i><i>training of adaptive athletes, adaptive guides\/instructors or companions.<\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Participants must demonstrate the ability to perform as follows:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u2756 Participants must be able to comply with basic directions, rules and etiquette independently or with the assistance of an adaptive guide\/instructor or companion: i.e. following directions, taking turns, yielding to others who have the right of way, waiting for the instructor or rest of the group.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u2756 Participants must be able to properly put on and take off the skiing or snowboarding equipment, independently or with the assistance of an adaptive guide\/instructor or companion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u2756 Participants must be able to load, ride, and unload the lifts safely, either independently or with the assistance of an adaptive guide\/instructor or companion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u2756 Participants must be able to Ski or Snowboard on appropriate trails and areas, control speed, and return to the base area, either independently or with the assistance of an adaptive guide\/instructor or companion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u2756 Participants must be able to get off of the ski trail, independently or with the help of an adaptive guide\/instructor or companion. If he\/she falls down, the adaptive athlete is able to get into the position necessary to continue skiing or snowboarding, independently or with the help of an adaptive guide\/instructor or companion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u2756 Participants must be able to comply with \u201cYour Responsibility Code.\u201d This is another example of EEC because it must be applied to all skiers and riders, those with and without disabilities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u2713 Always stay in control.<br \/>\n\u2713 People ahead of you have the right-of-way.<br \/>\n\u2713 Stop in a safe place for you and others.<br \/>\n\u2713 Whenever starting downhill or merging, look uphill and yield.<br \/>\n\u2713 Use devices to help prevent runaway equipment.<br \/>\n\u2713 Observe signs and warnings and keep off closed trails.<br \/>\n\u2713 Know how to safely use the ski lifts.<\/p>\n<p>~ <i>Courtesy of the National Ski Areas Association<\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u2756 Participants must acknowledge the following: \u201cI have made my own investigation of the risks associated with this adaptive snow sports program, event, course or trip. At any time, I can ask any Program Leader\/Adaptive Guide\/ Instructor for more information about the risks of the activity. Participation is based on our &#8220;Adaptive Challenge By Choice\u201d Model. A variety of adaptive challenges\/activities will be presented during a scheduled session, I can accept or decline to engage in an adaptive challenge\/activity at any time with the understanding that I will have an opportunity to revisit the adaptive challenge\/activity in the future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">By signing this document, I hereby acknowledge both my general fitness to participate in adaptive snow sports as well as my ability to perform and satisfy minimal: (a) Essential Eligibility Criteria (EEC), (b) Functional Independence (FI) and (c) Thresholds for Safe Participation (TSP).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Furthermore, if at any point in time I assess my general fitness to participate, and\/or my ability to perform these minimal functional thresholds for safe participation and I determine that I can No longer fulfill the criteria, I will alert Therapeutic Adventures \/ IndependencePlus Adaptive Sports (TA\/I~AS) Leaders, adaptive guides, and instructors.<\/p>\n<div
