3rd Annual – Seas the Day – Veterans’ Outdoor Day (May 12, 2018)
This is the 3rd Annual Seas the Day event, and we hope the biggest and most successful yet! Seas the Day is intended as an opportunity for the veteran community to come together, share passions, skills, athletic endeavors and resources with each other. Formerly a collaboration between UVA organization 4S (Students Supporting Soldiers’ pSychology) and the West Point Society of Monticello, the event has grown to encompass a wide variety of veteran run and veteran centered groups. Like past years, the day will offer a variety of outdoor athletic opportunities not limited to learn-to-row with Varsity UVA Women’s and Men’s Rowing Teams, kayak fishing instruction, kayak instruction, professional fly and spin fishing instruction, cornhole, kids activities, and the presence of several local gyms and studios. A free lunch is provided by Mission BBQ, and speeches will be delivered by our most welcome guests and K9s for Warriors graduates James Kuiken and Helyn Stowe, along with their loyal K9s.
Participation is intended to be whatever the individual and their family or close friends desires to do, as much or as little as they are interested in. There will be a veritable ‘veteran expo’ at the event, featuring representatives from different physical activity, community, veteran mental health and generally veteran friendly organizations and companies that will be joining forces to see how they can help each other. The hope is that lasting connections will be made, new friends will be made, a new activity will be explored, and families will enjoy each others’ company, all with a new sense of community. As a takeaway for guests, a new, veteran-focused rowing program for the Charlottesville area will be launching at the event!
